National Emergency Medal Presentation

More than 700 members from 39 CFA brigades in the Eastern Metropolitan Region have received a National Emergency Medal throughout September and October, with at least eighty more award sets to be presented.

Four presentation ceremonies were held to honour and recognise the members who served during the 2009 Victorian Fires in frontline firefighting, support, and behind-the-scenes roles.

The National Emergency Medal, which is coordinated and approved by the Governor General’s office in Canberra, recognises service to others during an emergency of national significance.

Craig Ferguson, a member of Bayswater Fire Brigade and manager within CFA’s Operational Training and Volunteerism department, described the occasion as ‘intimate and heartfelt’, despite the large number of people involved.

“The event was full of pride, camaraderie and the sense of family which is CFA to the core,” he said.

Eastern Metropolitan Regional Director David Baker said that the regional management team was proud of the member’s steadfast service during a dark time in this State’s history.

“We also take this opportunity to thank those members that serve their local communities today in continuing to protect lives and property from the threat of fire.”

“The fires in 2009 were a reminder of the reality of human fragility in the face of an overwhelming natural disaster.

“But the fires were also a reminder of our tremendous human resilience and the ability and willingness to evolve from our experiences,” said Mr Baker.
